CELPIP Writing Task 2 Guidelines
CELPIP Writing Task 2 Guidelines
(1) Writing your response - First Draft:
1) Start writing. Follow your plan if it is working. If it is too difficult or complicated to do, then that could mean your plan needs to be adjusted. Be open to changing your plan.
2) When you are writing, avoid using the words and phrases in the prompt. Try to think of original ways to express key ideas without repeating pars of the prompt.
3) Try to use strong, descriptive vocabulary that communicates exactly what you mean. If your vocabulary is good enough, think of words that are more specific than, for example, "make", "do", "big", and "say."
4) Vary your sentence structure. Try to use a combination of simple, compound, and complex sentences. Make sure you don't have whole paragraphs full of short, simple sentences.
5) Try to use appropriate transitions and connectors to show the relationship between sentences and paragraphs. Be careful to choose the right ones.
6) Keep in mind that you are writing an email message and format your response accordingly.
7) Be culturally aware. Are you writing in a way that is appropriate to Canadian culture? See, for example, our comments on emotions in the "Tips for Writing Email Messages" section below.
8) Read: If you have planned your work well, then your letter should be logical and well organized. Read it with "fresh eyes" and see if you need to make any changes to improve this.
9) Word Count: Check your word count and make sure your letter isn't too long or too short. If it is, make the necessary adjustments by cutting text or adding text.
10) Edit and Rewrite: Check your grammar, punctuation, syntax, sentence structre, paragraphing, formatting, word choice, and word count. There are always ways to improve your work if you have time.
11) Final Check: If you have time, read your response one last time and make any last- mminute changes to improve your work.
2) Example sample.
Read the following information.
Complaints You recently made reservations for dinner at a very famous and expensive restaurant in town. However, the meal and the service were terrible. The restaurant manager was not available to solve the problem, so you left without a resolution.
In about 150-200 words, write an email to the restaurant’s manager explaining your experience. Your email should do the following things:
- State what problems you had with the food you ordered.
- Complain about the service.
- Describe how you want the restaurant to resolve the problem to your satisfaction.
You are given 30 minutes for this.
